The Good, the Bad and the Blu-rays

Sometimes it's just clear why a particular film has been released on a certain week. With Father's day this weekend, there's some bizarre new releases out to tie in with it, including some inappropriately sentimental stories, some delightfully trashy films and some rather poorly photoshopped movie stars.

Alternate Movie History Goes Bananas

This week the Internet has been chock full of movies from alternate universes or revisionist takes on history that somehow don't quite add up, but that you'd definitely pay good money to see. First is the new one sheet for the promisingly titled Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter that you can see above. Next, from the awesome online gallery, Movies From An Alternate Universe comes this collection of movie posters for films that could have been.

As soon as someone invents time travel, let's let the Hollywood scriptwriters have first go on it. Seriously, who wouldn't want to see that version of Drive? All the posters are pretty special, and I can't recommend enough that you head over to the proper site to check out the rest of the collection in full. Finally, a trailer FDR American Badass!, a film that looks like it's a joke from some wacky cult sketch show you've never heard of, but (and I can't stress enough), THIS IS A REAL MOVIE.

It's the movie J. Edgar could have been, if only Clint Eastwood had been a braver filmmaker. Shoulda, woulda, coulda, Clint. Shoulda, woulda, coulda.

The Dude Wines, Dines & Designs...

Regular readers of the site may have seen the recent article about the work of Grindhouse poster designer extraordinaire Tom Hodge, better known as The Dude Designs. His retro styled posters for Hobo With A Shotgun and Father's Day hark back to the bygone era of video nasties and exploitation cinema and left me immediately wanting to see those films.

They say you should never judge a book by its cover, but I don't think the same idiom applies to movies. There's nothing I enjoy more than a good movie poster, and I often base my decision on whether to watch a film on how creative the poster design is. The granddaddy of the art form is Saul Bass, followed closely behind by the amazing Drew Struzan (whose work we've featured on the site before), but it's exciting when someone new arrives on the scene with a cool body of work to admire.
