How Do You Solve a Problem Like Piranha?

So you've gone to all the trouble to give your sequel to a marginally well received exploitation remake/sequel a snappy title that people will instantly understand and perhaps raise a wry smile to; but what do you do when said film gets released on home video format?

Okay, so now we've got Piranha 3DD 3D on Blu-ray and Piranha DD on DVD. That's not confusing in the slightest, is it? Still, I doubt the target audience of hormonal teenage boys will be paying too much attention to the title anyway.

Piranha 'whatever it wants to be called' is released on 3rd September and can be pre-ordered from Amazon now.

Anyone Fancy A Dip?

Showcasing all the advanced gender politics of a teenage boy's wet dream, we now have the first teaser trailer for the sequel to last year's Piranha 3D, cannily titled Piranha 3DD. Here's hoping the extra D doesn't stand for diminished returns, and instead is just a cheeky reference to the boosted assets it has on show this time around. In other words, the tits.

I was a fan of last year's remake of Joe Dante's terror classic, which knew exactly how stupid it was and exactly what its audience wanted to see (*cough* Kelly Brook naked underwater ballet scene *cough*), but it's a different crew behind the camera this time around, so all bets are off. The return of the continuity-bothering Ving Rhames and the appearance of Mitch Buchanan himself, David Hasselhoff, do seem to suggest that we're in for a similarly tongue in cheek ride, perhaps even reaching a whole new level of ridiculousness. Shotguns for legs, anyone?

I do spy a problem in that there probably isn't many cinemas who will advertise the film with its current title. It's not overly gratuitous in any way, but your average audience will either confuse it with Piranha 3D or ask for an explanation as to why this is "3DD", a question no-one will be eager to answer. At best they'll have to advertise it as Piranha 3DD 3D, which is just confusing. I foresee them resorting to a much easier to understand title, like Piranha 2, for example. But then there's another problem, that there already IS a Piranha 2, the original sequel directed by some nobody called James Cameron. Perhaps they'll resort to adding a subtitle. The original Piranha 2 had "The Spawning", so might I suggest "The Porning"?

Hmmm. On second thoughts that's more stupid than what they've already got. Piranha 3DD should be with us in all its boob baring glory early next year.

Apparently it's got some fish in it as well.

Back To The Footwear

I think I might be misquoting, but as Dr Emmett Brown once said...

"Trainers. Where we're going we'll probably need really cool Nike Air Mag instant lace-up trainers."

Back To The Future - Now In Cinemas

Back To The Future is now back in cinemas for a limited time only. I can't stress how much I still love this film so I went to see it today at the earliest opportunity. I'd happily count it amongst my favourite films, and one that I can watch over and over again, but I've never had the chance to see it on the big screen before. Of course, I've viewed it at home countless times on many different formats (the Blu-Ray gets released at the end of this month, at which point I'll watch all three films all over again), but there was a special joy in experiencing it cinematically.

I'm not going to give the film a full review as I'd hope that everyone on the planet has already seen it, and if you haven't... well I don't know what's wrong with you.

All I'll say is that it looks great with its new digital print, and the sound quality was amazing. I heard background noise that I'd never heard in the film before, cleaned up to pristine condition. I need to check on this, but I'm sure there were alternate takes included in the film too. There were some line readings and some shots that seemed completely different to me, but maybe that was a side effect of seeing it on the big screen for the first time.

Seeing Back To The Future cinematically is almost as much a joy as actually travelling back in time to see it during its original run. Don't hesitate and go and see it before its gone. Check out findanyfilm.com to see where it's showing locally.

PIRANHA 3D review

Yeah, it's been out for ages but I've just seen it. In glorious, gratuitous 3D no less.
Watch the trailer and read my review, after the jump...
