The Good, the Bad and the Blu-rays

Welcome to the only place you need to be if you like films with puppets, zombies, real-life Navy SEALs or three breasted prostitutes. Oh, and Mark Wahlberg.

Not So Hunky Dory - How I Managed To Make Life Just A Little Bit Harder For A Small Welsh Film

What do you get when you cross one inquisitive film blogger, one of the world's best known film magazines and a small Minnie Driver starring Welsh independent musical-comedy with an erroneous quote on its DVD cover? This whole debacle...

The Good, the Bad and the Blu-rays

In another quiet week for DVD and Blu-ray releases, one new comedy stands head and shoulders above the rest of the week's questionable horror ideas and potential lawsuit provoking rip-offs.

If you're looking for the year's most ridiculous film concept, it's this one.

In an industry that's constantly having to deal with criticism that it's running out of new ideas, it's good to see that there are still some blue sky thinkers out there. Sure, the plot for the upcoming Bait 3D may be a mere whisker away from a number of other films and boil down to 'shark in a supermarket', but what's wrong with that? An Australian production starring The Twilight Saga's Xavier Samuel and Nip/Tuck's Julian McMahon (who I'm pretty sure isn't in the trailer), thanks to this film we'll finally get the answer to the age old question of who would win in a fight between a shark and a tiny little dog.

Admittedly borrowing elements from The Mist, Tremors and that shark movie people are always talking about (no, not Deep Blue Sea), any film that has someone using a wire shopping basket as a shark-proof helmet is okay by me. Also, bonus points for using "clean up on aisle 7" as its poster tagline.

So, I Was on Another Podcast... Sort of.

Remember the ID Fest I went to in Derby a couple of weeks back? Remember when I said I had somehow agreed to appear on a podcast despite never doing it before (I've since become an expert at it and have done it once more), and that I was going to listen to it before sharing it with others in case I said anything stupid?

Well after a month of waiting here it is. After giving it a quick check first I've decided that I don't mind anyone listening to it as I don't say anything stupid. In fact, I don't say anything much at all, as by a twist of audio fate there was a bit of a problem with some of the recordings; mostly when I was talking, it would appear.

I've listened to it a couple of times and I'm pretty sure that all that remains of my witty asides and expert deconstruction of cinema and all its forms is me saying my name (which I got right) and the classic quote "Brian Blessed". Anyways, never mind about my ramblings, as despite a bit of dodgy audio at times, "The Heroes We Deserve" podcast features a bunch of people unquestionably better at public speaking than me talking about their favourite moments of the festival. Enjoy.

Sheffield DocFest 2012 - Sunday

Onto the final day of 2012's edition of the Sheffield DocFest, which included an early morning rise to hear all the award winners. Also, just as I was struggling to put together a list of my favourite films of the fest, it ended up saving two of the best films until right at the end.

The Good, the Bad and the Blu-rays

After last week's poor selection comes a busy week of new releases and re-issues. Although there's no one stand out title, if there's not something here for you to watch perhaps you're better off sticking with the tennis.

So, I Was on a Podcast...

Despite being absolutely petrified at the thought of having to listen to my own voice, I somehow agreed to appear on the Shot/Reverse Shot podcast at last weekend's Sheffield DocFest. Recorded after the last film of the weekend (totalling 15 for me in the space of three days), please put my random ramblings and potentially libelous statements down to the large intake of caffeine that had kept me going up to that point.

The podcast will be available to download via iTunes eventually, but for now you can listen to it on The Wooden Kimono's site here.

Sheffield DocFest 2012 - Saturday

In desperate need of some good documentaries after the massive let down of the night before, so began my second day at Sheffield DocFest, or as I decided to call it... SIX FILM SATURDAY.
